Breed History

Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is the fourth largest beef breed association in the United States. The Beefmaster breed has consistently grown since the development of the Beefmaster by the breed founder, Tom Lasater, in the 1930's.  Mr. Lasater established selection criteria based on six essentials:  Weight, Conformation, Milking Ability, Fertility, Hardiness and Disposition.  Mr. Lasater developed Beefmasters through a process of crossing Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman cattle, resulting in a Beefmaster being composed of approximately 25% Hereford, 25% Shorthorn, and 50% Brahman. 

While red is the most common color, the breed has no color standards, and are therefore found in any color. The U.S. Department of Agriculture officially recognized the Beefmaster as a pure breed in 1954.

The breed has proven to perform equally well in both warm and cold climates, thus there has been a tremendous increase in demand for Beefmaster cattle in the northern United States and Canada. From the 1970's to the 1990's, BBU membership grew from 300 to nearly 7,000.  Though there have been various breed associations within the Beefmaster breed, by the mid-90's Beefmaster Breeders Universal and the Foundation Beefmaster Association (FBA) were the two remaining associations dividing the breed.  At that time, the two merged to create a single, stronger breed association, Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU).
